April 2022 | By Tina

There is something unique about the tactile touch from reading a newspaper first hand. However, with the digital age upon us, many newspapers have shifted to online digital formats. Below we will discuss the positives of the digital age of newspapers, what type of genealogy and local history information can be obtained from them, and a list of some of the newspapers (digital and print) that Indian Trails Public Library has for your reading pleasure.

Digital newspapers allow for immediate accessibility and convenience. In this fast moving and ever changing world online newspapers provide a fast and easily accessible way to acquire an article and its relevant contents versus fumbling through a stack of print newspapers to try and find your article.

What are some other positives of online newspapers?

  1. a wider audience can be reached via online coverage,
  2. online articles are written specifically for the digital platform and are prone to being more concise than print,
  3. printing and scanning an article is a fairly simple way to acquire print versions if needed. Just visit your local library!
  4. social media allows readers to now share and recommend your online content. This can extend your readership and give opportunities for further engagement.
  5. You can often search within a document, if you are looking for an exact name, phrase, or other information

Sharing your family history online: a guide for family historians

Paton’s book Sharing your Family History Online: A Guide for Family Historians “explores the many ways in which we can present our genealogy research and encourages online collaboration. Paton details the many organizations and social media applications that can permit co-operation, describe the software platforms on which we can collate our stories, and illustrate the many ways in which we can publish our stories online. Chris Paton helps the reader explore how they can contact experts and distant relatives not only through sharing their stories, but by also accessing uniquely held documentation by family members around the world, including our very own shared DNA.” — Provided by publisher.
