English as a Second Language (ESL)


IN-PERSON CLASSES

We offer in-person ESL classes at beginner, intermediate and advanced levels for adult learners.

Registration for our Summer Quarter is currently full.

Fall Quarter: September 9 – November 24
Registration begins: July 1

To enroll in a class, students must first register for an ESL Intake Appointment. During the appointment, students will take a short placement exam and then register for a class or join the waiting list. Class days and times will be shared at the Intake Appointment. 

Beginning July 1, register in one of three ways:
•Register online at esl-itpld.youcanbook.me
•Register in person at the Adult Services Desk on the second floor of the library
•Call 847.459.4100 extension 3 for Adult Services

ESL Lab Services

Stop by the ESL Lab on the second floor of the library and use our computers to learn English on your own time. Library staff and volunteers are available to assist you.  

The lab also houses our ESL Tutor Collection, which contains instructional materials to assist those teaching or tutoring English language learners. These materials are available for use inside the library or for checkout.

ESL Lab challenge

April 8 – May 3

Earn a chance to win a book and a coffee mug by spending time in the ESL Lab to practice English. Use the computers, play a board game with friends, or practice speaking with staff and volunteers. You will earn one ticket toward the raffle for each day you spend at least 15 minutes in the Lab.

This challenge is open to anyone learning English as a second language. One winner will be selected at random and contacted after May 3.

 

ESL COLLECTION

The library has many English Language Learning materials available for you to use in the library or check out with a library card to take home. Visit the second floor of the library and ask a staff member to show you where to find our English language learning books.  

Online ESL Resources

The library offers several online resources for learning English, including: 

  • Duolingo
    • Learn English or other languages with instruction in your native language (20+ native languages available) 
    • No library card required, free for everyone to use.
  • Gale Courses
    • Offers online courses on a variety of subjects, including courses for English language learners 
    • For Indian Trails Library card holders only. If you have a card from a different library, check that library’s website, as they may also offer this resource to their cardholders. 
  • Mango
    • Learn English or other languages with instruction in your native language (20+ native languages available) 
    • Free for everyone if used on a library computer. Indian Trails Library card holders can also access this resource from home for free. 
  • Ventures Arcade
    • This website is a companion to the Cambridge Ventures textbooks we use in our classes. It contains exercises for 5 different levels of English, plus practice questions for the U.S. citizenship test. 
    • All content is in English, there is no native language translation or instruction. 
    • No library card required, free for everyone to use.

Would you like to help people from around the world learn English? We have opportunities for volunteers to provide one-on-one tutoring, assist teachers in the classroom, and assist students in our ESL Lab.
