1,000 Books Before Kindergarten

The 1000 books before kindergarten logo is of a snail reading a book, surrounded by woodland creatures on a sunny day.

Ages Birth-Pre-K

Read 1000 books to or with your child before kindergarten.

“Children need to hear 1000 stories read aloud before they begin to learn to read for themselves.” – Reading Magic by Mem Fox

How it works

  1. Register your child at the Youth Services desk to receive:
    • An instructional brochure and the first reading log that follows woodland animals on a reading journey.
    • A free tote bag.
    • A free book that is yours to keep.
  2. Read out loud to or with your child.
  3. Color a shape in your reading log every time you finish or repeat a book. Every book you read with your child counts, including:
    • Books read at home
    • Books read at the library
    • Books read at daycare or preschool
    • Books read at storytime
    • Books you repeat.
