Frequently Asked Questions about the 2010 Census:

What is the census?
The census is a count of everyone residing in the United States.  All U.S. residents must be counted - people of all races and ethnic groups, both citizens and non-citizens.

The U.S. Consititution requires a national census once every ten years. The first U.S. census was conducted in 1790.

Why is the census important in this community?
Every year the federal government allocates more than $300 billion to states and communities based, in part, on population. The Medical Assistance Program, Highway Planning and Construction, Federal Transit, Formula Grants, Title I Grants to Educational Agencies, State Children's Insurance Program, Head Start and Unemployment Insurance are just a few of the programs that rely on population data. Cities, libraries and schools also receive funding based on the population count.

According to data from the federal assistance programs, one resident filling in and returning the form is an annual gift of $1,200 to the community. The census helps determine democratic representation. An accurate count of residents also generates jobs as businesses choose location sites.

Is your census information safe?
By law, the Census Bureau cannot share your answers with anyone, including federal, state and local agencies. By law, the census information cannot be shared with immigration agencies.
